The Castles of Cannero The Castles of Cannero Riviera, known as the "Malpaga" castles, rise out of the water just off the shore, a couple of kilometres from the village of Cannero. Two small islets bear the remains of fortified medieval castles, originally home to lake pirates who terrorized the locals and controlled trade with nearby Switzerland. The surrounding clear waters have merited Bandiera Blu recognition. Rocca Borromeo of Angera A fortified medieval castle, built as a defence stronghold over the southern reaches of Lake Maggiore. The Hall of Justice (La Sala della Giustizia) presents a cycle of frescoes dating back to the end of the XIIIth century and the Doll and Toy Museum houses one of the most important European collection of its kind. The Castle of Vogogna Constructed in the XIVth century by Giovanni Visconti, in a position dominating the village of Vogogna, the castle, with its characteristic semicircular tower and crenelated walls, still conserves its medieval fascination. Fortifications of the Cadorna Military Line The remains of trenches, galleries, fortifications, small barracks, wartime depositories and military roads, all located along a convenient, gently-sloping mule-track that was purpose-built for transporting artillery, were constructed as a defensive line upon orders of General Luigi Cadorna. Many of these were real feats of architecture and engineering and were constructed with local materials, using, for example white granite from the quarries at Montorfano, and have wisely been recovered and restored wherever possible. The Line is now part of a network of fascinating hiking itineraries with breathtaking views over Lakes Maggiore, Mergozzo and Orta and the mountains of the VCO province. Partisan Resistance Itineraries Numerous are the legacies of the Partisan Republic of Ossola, proclaimed in 1944 during the second world war, and of the struggle for Liberation in the Verbano Cusio Ossola: la Casa della Resistenza at Verbania with the Memorial to the 42 Martyrs of Fondotoce, the Alfredo di Dio Museum at Ornavasso and the Historical Rooms of the Resistance at Domodossola and Villadossola.
